Speech Therapy for Children and Families in Seattle
When your child is hard to understand, not using as many words as expected, stuttering, or struggling to communicate at home or school, it can be difficult to know what to do next. Some families are told to wait. Others are referred for an evaluation. Many simply know that communication is taking more effort than it should.
Swanson Speech Therapy helps Seattle families understand what’s going on and what kind of support may help. Our speech-language pathologists create individualized therapy plans for children from toddlers through teens, with care that is practical, supportive, and built around each child’s real life.
Helping Your Child Communicate With More Confidence
Every child communicates in their own way. Some children need help saying sounds clearly. Some need support building words and sentences. Others need help with stuttering, social communication, or using language in daily routines.
At Swanson Speech Therapy, we provide personalized pediatric speech therapy in Seattle that meets your child where they are. Our work is strengths-based, practical, and family-centered, so therapy doesn’t stop when the session ends. We help parents understand what we’re working on, why it matters, and how to support progress at home.

Client Reviews
Posted on Google Fikerte Befekadu My 3 years old has been coming to Swanson speech therapy for over a year now and we are impressed. Andrea is an amazing speech pathologist; she has worked so hard to make a difference in my son’s speaking abilities. My son looks forward to coming here and working with Andrea. She has different games she sets up for him for each session and that’s how she gets him to talk more. She also has sound cards he practices with her at each session. Sometimes she also sends us home with some target words. I can’t imagine where my son would be in speaking if we didn’t bring him to Swanson. Thank you, Swanson!Posted on Google Abby Yawitz Natalie was incredibly supportive throughout the speech therapy process. Both of my children worked with her, and she made every session engaging, fun, and encouraging. They genuinely looked forward to going, which made a huge difference. Thanks to her expertise and positive approach, both kids made great progress and were very successful in reaching their goals. We are so grateful for the care, patience, and dedication she showed our family.Posted on Google Ashley Neiswender My 3yo has been seeing Andrea for 4 months and I couldn’t be happier with the language support she is getting and the results we are seeing. Andrea is so great with kids, and creates customized approaches to tackle the sounds we are working on, sends us home with exercises to work on that are super approachable and easy to integrate into our day. Would highly recommend to anyone who has a little one who needs speech supportPosted on Google Brianna Yearwood Miss Andrea is amazing! Our daughter has made so much progress and looks forward to speech therapy every time. So grateful to have found this placePosted on Google Sam Bowerman Swanson Speech Therapy is fantastic! My son 's improvement was night and day. He went from being barely understandable at age 4, to speaking clearly and age appropriately by 5! The teachers are super supportive and make learning a fun environment. My son was actually sad to graduate because he looked forward to going every Monday afternoon. Highly recommend!Posted on Google Amy Betz We had a fantastic experience with Swanson Speech Therapy for my daughter. The location was convenient and very comfortable and quiet. Natalie immediately developed rapport with my daughter, efficiently evaluated her needs, and implemented a plan that was fun and effective. She was able to connect brain/awareness, mouth/tongue position, and sound/articulation in a way that my daughter could connect and understand for herself which gave her the foundation to make real progress. Natalie was able to relate the sessions to real life which helped to bridge the skills into day to day use drawing on interests and activities that my daughter had shared which made it feel relevant to her. We could not have been more happy with the time we spent with Swanson Speech Therapy!Posted on Google Glory Lee Natalie and the team at Swanson Speech Therapy has been a godsend. I don’t know how they do it, but they are able to engage with my kids like no other teachers. Both my kids were seeing natalie on a weekly basis and the leaps they made week to week has been nothing short of amazing. My kids have worked with both teacher Rachel. (yes, they’re both Rachels and so kind with my kids.) Natalie and team are the greatest empaths that creates a positive and safe environment for the kids to learn and grow. I say this to everyone I talk to— SLPs are literal angels on earth! We are so grateful for all that Natalie has done for us as a family and I appreciate how encouraging and comforting she’s been during each and every one of our visits. How do I know if my child needs speech therapy?
Your child may benefit from speech therapy if they’re hard to understand, using fewer words than expected, struggling to combine words, stuttering, having trouble following directions, or becoming frustrated when they can’t communicate clearly. Some children also need support with play, social communication, or expressing their thoughts in a way others can understand.
A speech therapy evaluation can help determine whether your child’s communication skills are developing as expected or whether additional support may be helpful.
What age should my child start speech therapy?
Children can begin speech therapy at many different ages, including toddlerhood. For younger children, therapy often focuses on early communication skills such as gestures, imitation, first words, play, turn-taking, and parent coaching.
You don’t need to wait until your child starts school to ask for help. If you’re concerned about your child’s speech or language development, an evaluation can give you clarity and help you understand the next step.
Where does speech therapy take place?
We provide a variety of different treatment settings including our clinic space, virtual, your home, and or community settings such as your child’s school or daycare
Do you offer speech therapy for toddlers in Seattle?
Yes. Swanson Speech Therapy works with toddlers who may be late to talk, using fewer words than expected, relying mostly on gestures, or becoming frustrated when trying to communicate.
Toddler speech therapy often looks like play. Sessions may include toys, books, songs, routines, movement, and parent coaching to help your child build communication skills in a natural and encouraging way.
How often can my child have speech therapy?
The frequency of sessions is dependent on your child’s needs and is determined case by case. However, we typically provide sessions 1-3 times per week for each child we treat.
What does pediatric speech therapy help with?
Pediatric speech therapy can help with a wide range of communication needs, including speech delay, late talking, articulation, lisps, speech sound disorders, childhood apraxia of speech, stuttering, expressive language delay, receptive language delay, social communication differences, autism-related communication needs, and early communication skills.
Every child’s needs are different, so therapy begins with understanding your child’s strengths, challenges, and goals.
What’s the difference between speech delay and language delay?
A speech delay usually means a child is having difficulty producing sounds clearly or being understood by others. A language delay means a child may have difficulty understanding language, using words, combining words, answering questions, or expressing ideas.
Some children have one area of need, while others need support with both speech and language. A speech therapy evaluation can help identify what type of support may be most helpful.
What’s the difference between expressive and receptive language?
Expressive language is how a child communicates their thoughts, needs, and ideas. This may include words, sentences, gestures, signs, or other communication tools.
Receptive language is what a child understands. This may include following directions, understanding questions, identifying objects, or understanding concepts.
A child may understand more than they can say, or they may have difficulty in both areas. Speech therapy can support expressive language, receptive language, or both.
Can speech therapy help if my child is hard to understand?
Yes. Speech therapy can help children who are difficult to understand because of articulation delays, speech sound errors, lisps, phonological patterns, or motor speech challenges.
Therapy may focus on helping your child learn how to produce specific sounds, use those sounds in words and sentences, and carry clearer speech into everyday conversation.
Can speech therapy help with stuttering?
Yes. Speech therapy can support children who stutter and help families better understand fluency. Therapy may focus on reducing communication pressure, building confidence, supporting easier communication, and helping the child and family respond to stuttering in a supportive way.
If your child is stuttering, avoiding talking, showing frustration, or seems aware of their speech, it may be a good time to reach out.
Can speech therapy help with childhood apraxia of speech?
Yes. Children with childhood apraxia of speech often need specialized support for motor planning and speech production. Therapy may involve repeated practice, careful cueing, and structured support to help a child plan and produce speech sounds more consistently.
If you suspect apraxia or have been told your child may have motor speech difficulties, a speech therapy evaluation can help clarify your child’s needs.
Can speech therapy help autistic children?
Yes. Speech therapy can support autistic children with communication in many different ways. Depending on the child, therapy may focus on early communication, play, gestures, language development, social communication, self-advocacy, AAC, or helping the child communicate more effectively across daily routines.
The goal is not to change who your child is. The goal is to support meaningful communication in a way that respects your child’s strengths, needs, and personality.
What is AAC, and does using AAC stop a child from talking?
AAC stands for augmentative and alternative communication. It can include signs, pictures, communication boards, or speech-generating devices.
AAC does not prevent speech. For many children, AAC gives them another way to communicate while speech and language skills continue to develop. It can reduce frustration and help a child express more than they can say verbally at the moment.
Do you accept insurance?
We accept Premera insurance and are considered an in-network provider for Premera. For all other insurance companies, we are considered an out-of-network provider and families pay directly after each session. Many families that we work with are able to bill insurance themselves with the invoice we provide.
What happens during a speech therapy evaluation?
A speech therapy evaluation helps identify your child’s communication strengths and areas of need. Evaluations are typically 60–90 minutes and may include parent interview, play-based observation, standardized assessment, speech sound testing, language sampling, and discussion of your child’s developmental history.
After the evaluation, we’ll explain what we found in clear language and talk through whether therapy is recommended.
How long does a speech therapy evaluation take?
Evaluations are typically 60–90 minutes. The exact length may depend on your child’s age, attention, communication needs, and the areas being assessed.
The evaluation gives us time to learn about your child, listen to your concerns, observe communication, and gather the information needed to make thoughtful recommendations.
What is expected of me as a parent?
We ask that you play an active role in your child’s speech and language therapy, although that may look different for different clients. Ways that parents have engaged in their child’s therapy in the past include: getting on the floor and playing with the SLP and their child, actively observing and trying strategies used in the session at home, helping their child to play speech “games” at home that have been discussed and played during therapy. If it works out best for your family to have therapy provided at a school or daycare setting, we will put a plan in place to have open communication about strategies used during each session.
