Screens and media are a big part of modern family life. For parents of young children, it can be hard to know how much is too much and it can be tricky to make decisions about types of media use.

The American Academy of Pediatrics provides helpful age based guidelines for screen time for children ages 0-5, but every family’s situation is unique. What matters most is finding a healthy balance between media use and meaningful, real-world interactions.

Please refer to our handout for more information on screen time and early development. This handout explains:

  • Current screen time recommendations for children ages 0–5
  • How screen use can affect language development
  • Ideas for choosing high-quality content
  • Creative ideas for replacing screen time with playtime
